What Else Should Be Checked Besides Seals When a Sprocket Shaft Assembly Leaks Oil?

Replacing seals is a common remedy for oil leakage of sprocket shaft assemblies. However, leakage may persist after seal replacement or recur after a period of operation. This means the leakage is not necessarily caused by the seals themselves.
Simply replacing seals cannot resolve the root cause if related mating surfaces and operating conditions are not inspected. We recommend troubleshooting in the following sequence:
  1. Seal selection and installation Installing a new seal does not guarantee restored sealing performance. Scratches or deformation of the seal lip during installation can compromise sealing effectiveness. Inspect the seal lip and installation condition to prevent repeated leakage resulting from improper installation of the new seal.
  2. Shaft journal wear and surface condition After prolonged operation, the area of the shaft journal in contact with the seal may develop wear, scratches or grooves. If the sealing contact surface is damaged, a reliable seal cannot be formed even with a brand-new seal. Examine the surface condition of the sealing contact zone on the shaft journal, assess whether wear exceeds the allowable limit, and then decide on repair or replacement.
  3. Abnormal bearings and mating components affecting sealing performance Bearing wear, abnormal clearances, misalignment or improper assembly of associated mating parts may lead to abnormal axial movement or wobble of the shaft during rotation. This subjects the seal to uneven stress, accelerates wear and impairs sealing performance. Check relevant mating parts, assembly condition and wear marks to identify any anomalies that undermine sealing.

  1. Blocked breather hole and abnormal oil level Incorrect lubricant filling volume or a blocked breather structure that raises internal pressure will increase the load on the sealing area and cause oil leakage. Verify the oil level and ensure the breather hole is unobstructed. Do not simply attribute oil leakage to seal failure.
Recurring oil leakage requires comprehensive inspection to locate the root cause. Henan Shuangzhi provides manufacturing, sales and technical services for coal mining machine spare parts.
