Heat Treatment of Sprocket Assembly: Three Critical Stages of Heating, Quenching and Tempering

Once a sprocket assembly enters the heat treatment process, the key control does not only lie in temperature, but also the process parameters across all stages including heating, holding, quenching and tempering. Especially for large-sized sprocket assemblies, heat treatment shall not only ensure the expected microstructure transformation inside the material, but also minimize the risk of deformation and cracking during quenching.

  1. Heating and Holding: The Foundation of Heat Treatment
Henan Shuangzhi adopts electric furnaces for the heating and holding process of sprocket assembly heat treatment, and monitors the heating temperature throughout the whole process with thermocouples. The workpiece is heated step by step in accordance with the established process. After reaching the set temperature, sufficient holding time is applied to make the internal and external temperature of the workpiece as uniform as possible, laying a stable foundation for microstructure transformation in the subsequent quenching stage.
  1. Quenching Stage: Focus on Microstructure Transformation and Deformation Control
After full heating and holding, the workpiece enters the quenching and cooling stage. By controlling the cooling rate, the material can complete the expected microstructure transformation, and finally form a quenched microstructure dominated by martensite.
Due to the large size of the sprocket assembly, the temperature changes between the inside and outside of the workpiece are not consistent during quenching, which generates thermal stress and structural stress. Therefore, the cooling process needs to balance the effect of microstructure transformation and deformation control.
Henan Shuangzhi selects suitable quenching cooling media, and precisely controls the cooling process while meeting the requirements of microstructure transformation, so as to reduce the risk of deformation and cracking caused by uneven cooling as much as possible.
  1. High-Temperature Tempering after Quenching to Stabilize the Microstructure
After quenching, the workpiece still retains high residual stress inside. Tempering is required to further adjust the microstructure.
High-temperature tempering can release and reduce the internal stress generated in quenching, further stabilize the material microstructure, and achieve a proper balance among hardness, strength and toughness, so that the material properties can better match the actual working conditions.

Heating temperature monitored by thermocouples, cooling process controlled in the quenching stage, and microstructure stabilized through high-temperature tempering. Although these seem to be just several simple processes, the stability of each link has a significant impact on the final microstructure and mechanical properties.
For sprocket assemblies working under long-term heavy load, impact and wear conditions, heat treatment is not an independent process. Microstructure stability, hardness uniformity and quenching deformation control will all affect subsequent finish machining, assembly and the final service performance of the component.
